Yes. Joint Rejuvenate works well with use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as phenylbutazone (bute) and pentosan polysulfate injections.
There are no contraindications with other supplements; theoretically it may be synergistic with turmeric or rosehip products.
Researchers have been unable to establish toxic dose upper levels of green-lipped mussel powder. Joint Rejuvenate is one of the safest products you can feed to an animal.
Studies have shown no adverse effects at doses up to 7,000 times the recommended rate.
Dogs and Cats:
- Treatment dose: 20-60 mg/kg
- Example: 20kg dog x 60mg/kg = 1.2 grams
- Flat scoop = 1 gram; heaped scoop = 2 grams
- A 14-day double dose is recommended initially
Horses:
- Prevention (no symptoms): 2mg/kg (1 gram/flat scoop daily for 500kg horse)
- Early-stage wear (stiffness): 6-10 mg/kg (5 flat scoops daily for 500kg horse)
- Moderate-stage wear (subtle lameness): 20 mg/kg (5 heaped scoops daily for 500kg horse)
2 to 8 weeks in dogs, cats and horses. Improvement won't occur overnight like aspirin.
A double dose is recommended for the first 14 days. For active arthritic symptoms with no improvement after 14 days, there is only a 20% chance of improvement even with 8-week persistence.

Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) contains glucosamine naturally, along with omega-3 fatty acids, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid — all in a single whole-food source. Standalone glucosamine supplements provide only one of these compounds.
Published studies, including research from Helsinki University, have shown that green-lipped mussel provides broader anti-inflammatory and joint-repair benefits compared to glucosamine alone. Joint Rejuvenate delivers the full spectrum of bioactive compounds in their natural ratios.
Joint Rejuvenate uses pharmaceutical-grade whole green-lipped mussel powder, preserving the full spectrum of bioactive compounds through freeze-drying. Antinol uses a lipid extract (PCSO-524) which isolates certain fatty acids but removes other beneficial components like glucosamine and chondroitin.
4CYTE uses Epiitalis — a plant-based oil extract. While effective, it works through a different mechanism than green-lipped mussel.
Joint Rejuvenate is typically more cost-effective per gram of active ingredient, especially in larger sizes. Learn more on our Joint Rejuvenate page.
Yes. Joint Rejuvenate can be used preventatively in younger animals, particularly large breed puppies that are predisposed to joint issues later in life. The product has no known side effects even at very high dose rates.
For puppies, a maintenance dose of 20mg/kg is recommended as a preventative measure. Consult with Dr John Stewart for personalised dosage advice for your young animal.
