Joint Rejuvenate for Dogs

Nearly all dogs, as they age, will develop wear and tear in their joints. Some large breeds (eg German shepherds) are particularly prone to joint wear and tear because of their genetics.  All dogs are likely to benefit from supplementation with Joint Rejuvenate as they age.

Daily Dosage:

20-60mg per kg as a treatment dose.
The larger the dose, the greater the impact; hence we suggest using the larger dose.
A 14-day loading double dose is recommended.
A flat scoop is 1g. A heaped scoop is 2g.

For example (and converting to grams, for convenience):
7 kg small breed x 60mg = 0.42g. For maintenance feed 1/2 scoop. For loading dose feed 1 scoop.
20kg medium breed x 60mg = 1.2g. For maintenance feed 1 scoop. For loading dose feed 2 scoops.
35kg large breed x 60mg = 2.1g. For maintenance feed 2 scoops. For loading dose feed 4 scoops.

In most cases with active arthritis, symptom reduction will be seen using Joint Rejuvenate after 14 days. If symptom reduction is not apparent by 6-8 weeks, further administration of Joint Rejuvenate is unlikely to result in improvement.

Scientific Research

Joint Rejuvenate for Dogs and Green-Lipped Mussel

A number of publications from around the world have looked at the effects of green-lipped mussel on joint problems in dogs. The results have varied depending, amongst other things, on the quality of the green-lipped mussel powder and the dose rate. Heat is the enemy of the active compounds in green-lipped mussels. Especially in early studies, heat-damaged green-lipped mussel powder may have been used. As might be expected, the results when heat-damaged green-lipped mussel was used were poor. Consequently, Joint Rejuvenate is made using freeze-dried mussel powder.

Research From Helsinki University in Finland (Bjorkman et al (2009), Evaluating Complementary Therapies for Canine Osteoarthritis Part 1: Green-lipped Mussel (Perna Canaliculus)) that fed dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis either a placebo or GLMP for eight weeks in randomized, double-controlled and double-blinded clinical trials concluded that GLM alleviated chronic orthopedic pain in dogs.

Another paper (Rialland et al (2013), Effect of a diet enriched with green-lipped mussel on pain behaviour and function in dogs with clinical osteoarthritis) also reported reduced osteoarthritis symptoms in 23 dogs after 60 days of a GLM-enriched diet.

A similar result from a double-blind study was reported by Bui and Bierer (2003) in Influence of green lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) in alleviating arthritis symptoms in dogs. They found a marked reduction in joint pain and joint swelling after six weeks of incorporating green-lipped mussel into the diet.

Research has also been performed where dogs have been given different dose rates. The effects on wear-and-tear arthritis are dose-related; that is, the larger the dose, the greater the impact. The recommended dose rates for Joint Rejuvenate for dogs are 20 to 60 mg/kg. This dose rate has been determined based on dose rates reported in the scientific literature and our clinical experience with our own brand of green-lipped mussel powder (the Bioacteev brand) as a joint supplement for dogs.

This dose rate has been determined based on dose rates reported in the scientific literature and our clinical experience with our own brand of green-lipped mussel powder (Bioacteev brand) Not every green-lipped mussel product is assayed for its anti-inflammatory activity so it is difficult for the consumer to know the quality of the green-lipped mussel powder they are buying and what dose rate they should be feeding.

Our brand of green-lipped mussel powder (Bioacteev brand) was not used in any of the trials that led to the 4 publications present in the scientific literature.

What our customers say...

Initially I was sceptical about the claims. However, I have now been using Joint Rejuvenate in the Pound Road Veterinary Clinic for the last 6 years as part of my management of arthritis in dogs. It is a cost effective way of contributing to both pain relief and joint regeneration

I was unsure about the extent of improvement a joint product would provide, but got advice from my vet and decided to try one. Since putting Robbie, our elderly terrier on Joint Rejuvenate we have noticed a huge improvement in his limping, stiffness and overall willingness to play.
